Google Glass in Medicine: Just the Beginning
Google recently ended its Google Glass Explorer program after nearly two years of attempting to push the wearable device as a must-have and the wave of the future. While many consumers were critical of the look of the device, it managed to find a unique segment of the population that found great use for the device: those in the medical industry.

EHR Systems and Cloud Storage for Hospitals
Hospitals and healthcare organizations are progressing into the 21st century much quicker than previously anticipated. New data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reports the numbers of hospitals upgrading their electronic health-record systems is on the rise. After starting off slowly, there are nearly 3,700 hospitals meeting meaningful-use requirements after the deadline for eligible hospitals was recently extended to the end of December.

I’m starting to see this offered in more and more places. Telemedicine. Companies such as MDLive are partnering up with board-certified physicians and connecting them to people in need of seeing a doctor. These virtual doctor visits are done through video chats using their phone, tablet or computer.

Ambulance Drones to the Rescue
Heart attack victims may someday have a new lifeline thanks to the use of ambulance drones. A new kind of drone program from a Dutch graduate student utilizes GPS to deliver defibrillators to heart attack victims. By honing in on a mobile phone within 4.6 miles, the drone can be at a victim’s side in under a minute and then use live streaming audio and video to allow emergency personnel to provide instruction and advice on the defibrillator’s use.

U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals of 2013-2014
U.S. News and World Report released its 2013 rankings of the best adult and children’s hospitals in the United States, along with an Honor Roll of the overall top 18 hospitals in the nation. The rankings cover nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and span 16 medical specialties. Hospitals ranking near the top of at least six specialties earn a spot on the Honor Roll.
